Why You Need to Understand Roofing Certifications - RoofTek

Utah has plenty of roofing contractors – in fact there are several hundred companies that are roofers – and lots of others that do roofing, from a handyman to siding contractors. Finding the contractor that is right for you can take time and work, but finding a qualified Roofing Expert does not mean it has to cost more.

One way to narrow the field to professional, reputable roofers is checking their certifications, which come from the manufacturers. Roofing products need to be installed correctly and the manufacturers use certification programs to validate that roofers are using the right products, the right install practices, etc. In addition different manufacturers such as Owens Corning or GAF also require an intensive background and credit worthiness check on thier contractors, as well as requiring ongoing training of installers etc.

What is Roofing Certification?

Manufacturers of residential roofing materials — and this means primarily fiberglass-asphalt shingles — take pride in their products. They want to ensure their shingles are installed and displayed favorably, so customers are happy. The manufacturers back their products with warranties – in some cases the manufacturers will even extend warranty coverage that includes the workmanship of the roofing contractor that installed the roof. To make certain they are not paying out on warranty claims constantly, these shingle makers offer the strongest warranties to very few contractors, through certifications.

Most manufacturers also offer a standard and advanced level of certification – with only the fewest contractors achieving the highest certification levels.

Who are the top Shingle Manufacturers?

Fiberglass-asphalt shingles are made all over North America and in Canada. The top manufacturers include:

  1. GAF
  2. Owens Corning
  3. CertainTeed
  4. TAMKO
  5. Malarkey
  6. IKO
  7. Pabco

Of these manufacturers, each brand offers different programs – some with certifications and training – and others offer more loyalty-based rebates to the roofer (selling the cheaper products for cheaper prices).
